Air quality in several areas of Delhi deteriorated on Tuesday, with several regions recording alarming levels classified as ‘Very Poor’ by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Notable locations such as Ashok Vihar (305), Bawana (342), Anand Vihar (319), Chandani Chowk (333), and Dwarka (314) reported significant Air Quality Index (AQI) figures that exceeded 300. The air quality around the iconic India Gate and Kartavya Path was measured at 265, categorizing it as ‘Poor.’
In the Ghazipur area, the AQI was also marked at 319, while the Akshardham neighborhood reported the same disconcerting figure. A thick layer of toxic smoke blanketed the ITO region, where AQI levels approached 294. The CPCB classifies air quality levels as follows: 0-50 is ‘Good,’ indicating minimal health risks; 51-100 is ‘Satisfactory,’ acceptable for most but potentially bothersome for sensitive groups; 101-200 is ‘Moderate,’ where issues may arise for individuals with existing health conditions; 201-300 is ‘Poor,’ suggesting prolonged exposure could cause discomfort for everyone; and 301-400 is ‘Very Poor,’ where health effects can be significant.
As Delhi grapples with this ongoing air quality crisis, public concern has been amplified, highlighted by recent protests at Kartavya Path. A local court is expected to issue a bail ruling today for several protesters who were arrested on November 23 while demonstrating against the city’s toxic air. Judicial Magistrate Aridaman Singh Cheema had to defer the proceedings to December 9 due to illness. The protesters, including many students, were accused of chanting provocative slogans and deploying pepper spray against police officers. Their legal representatives have urged for expedited bail, citing upcoming exams and the urgent need for their release.
Meanwhile, the air quality in Mumbai also drew attention, albeit on a relatively less severe note. Residents awoke to a hazy morning, with the AQI around the Bandra Reclamation area reported at 170, categorizing it as ‘Moderate’ by CPCB standards.
The current air quality crisis places pressure on authorities and communities alike, urging a collective response to address the urgent health concerns stemming from increased pollution levels. As air quality remains a pressing issue in major Indian cities, public awareness and advocacy for cleaner air become ever more vital.
