United Airlines is maintaining its elite frequent flyer status requirements for 2027, following a similar approach to Delta Air Lines. This decision comes after United raised the thresholds for earning status in 2025, reflecting a broader industry trend of making high-tier benefits more challenging to achieve. The hunt for elite status often bestows advantages like early boarding, complimentary first-class upgrades (when available), waived baggage fees, and access to exclusive airport lounges.
However, the return of elite travelers post-pandemic, coupled with an influx of premium credit card holders, has resulted in congested boarding areas and extended wait times in lounges, sometimes outpacing TSA lines. airline executives have noted a shift in customer behavior, with more passengers willing to pay cash for first-class seats, which limits the availability of complimentary upgrades that attract many to pursue elite status.
Luc Bondar, the president of United’s MileagePlus loyalty program, indicated that the balance within United’s program has improved. “When you have benefits like upgrades, if everyone has status, then … fewer and fewer customers are going to get access to upgrades,” Bondar explained in an interview. “We feel good that they’re at the right level.”
Changes are slated for United’s program next year, impacting the status earned which will apply to travel in 2027. The airline is revamping its Plus Points system, a currency for high-tier Platinum and 1K loyalty members that goes beyond regular miles. Currently, Plus Points are earned based on a fixed mileage chart. However, starting in 2027, United will transition to a dynamic pricing model tied to demand. Additionally, elite members at the highest 1K status will soon be able to earn Plus Points through spending on co-branded credit cards.
United also announced enhanced access to Polaris Saver Award fares for status holders and United Chase credit card members, streamlining the booking process for top-tier cabin travel.
Airline loyalty programs have emerged as significant profit centers, with billions generated as airlines sell miles to banks when customers earn them through credit card expenditures. Last year, United escalated the spending requirements to achieve frequent flyer status for 2026 by approximately 25%, necessitating either co-branded card expenditures or a mix of spending and flying.
Recently, Delta confirmed it would retain its elite status earning thresholds for 2027, a decision that some analysts believe could influence American Airlines. Currently, American trails behind Delta and United in profitability and has yet to announce changes to its frequent flyer program. The airline is focusing on attracting more affluent customers with updated cabins and lounges; however, its competitors’ static elite-earning requirements may prompt American to reconsider its strategy.
