After six days of widespread flight disruptions, IndiGo announced on Sunday that it has largely restored its operations. The airline is ramping up to over 1,500 flights, reconnecting 135 of its 138 destinations. This is a significant improvement from Saturday, when IndiGo operated fewer than 700 flights due to severe operational issues that left thousands of passengers stranded at airports across the country.
The airline initiated a planned “reboot” of its systems and rosters to stabilize operations following the chaos. However, the situation has attracted strong political criticism and regulatory scrutiny. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has issued a show cause notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers and Accountable Manager Isidro Porqueras regarding significant operational lapses.
In response to the disruptions, Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu announced the formation of a committee tasked with investigating the root causes behind the flight cancellations and delays. He emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “We will take necessary action on that also. This thing shouldn’t be left unattended.” Naidu added that restoring normal flight operations is currently the government’s priority.
The minister highlighted that about 500,000 people travel by air daily in India, underscoring the urgency of resolving the ongoing disruption. Moreover, the Civil Aviation Ministry has set fare caps to prevent an unreasonable surge in ticket prices following the disruptions. Flights between 500 km and 1,000 km are capped at Rs 12,000, while those over 1,500 km are limited to Rs 18,000. These caps do not apply to Business class or RCS UDAAN flights.
The ministry acknowledged that the flight disruptions had caused cancellations, leading to capacity constraints and inflated fares on several routes. As IndiGo works to regain full operational capacity, the focus remains on finding and rectifying the issues that led to this unprecedented chaos in air travel across the country.
