MNF Honoring Swaraj Kaushal: A Tribute to Leadership and Legacy
The Mizo National Front (MNF), the main opposition party in Mizoram, paid tribute on Friday to former governor Swaraj Kaushal, who passed away from a heart attack at 73. Kaushal, notable for his role as a legal adviser, was involved with the negotiating team of the former underground organization during peace talks with the Indian government. In expressing condolences, former chief minister and MNF party leader Zoramthanga hailed Kaushal as a dependable figure and one of the youngest individuals to have held the governor’s office in India.
Zoramthanga reminisced about Kaushal’s support during difficult times, particularly when he served as legal counsel for MNF leader Laldenga, who was imprisoned in Tihar Jail in 1979 during the negotiation process. “Kaushal wasn’t just a lawyer; he financially supported Laldenga’s release on bail,” Zoramthanga noted. He, along with opposition leader Lalchhandama Ralte, sent a condolence message to Kaushal’s daughter, Bansuri Swaraj, who serves as a member of the Lok Sabha.
Renee Lalrinzuali, Laldenga’s daughter and MNF’s general secretary, emphasized Kaushal’s close friendship with both the MNF and Laldenga’s family. “He was deeply trusted by my father during the peace negotiations and played a crucial role in drafting the Mizo Accord’s terms and conditions,” she explained. Kaushal became the first advocate general when Mizoram achieved statehood under Laldenga’s leadership and served as governor from 1990 to 1993.
