India and Russia Forge Stronger Bonds in Agricultural Trade Growth
Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan met with his Russian counterpart, Oxana Lut, in New Delhi on December 5. The meeting focused on enhancing bilateral cooperation in agriculture, including trade, fertilisers, seeds, market access, and joint research, as stated in an official announcement. Both nations expressed a commitment to innovation aimed at benefiting their respective farmers.
Chouhan emphasized that agricultural trade between India and Russia has grown significantly, currently valued at approximately $3.5 billion. He advocated for a more balanced trade approach and expressed gratitude to Russia for resolving long-standing issues concerning the export of Indian potatoes, pomegranates, and seeds. Lut demonstrated a strong interest in expanding trade and bolstering cooperation in the agricultural sector.
To promote agricultural trade, the two sides explored potential exports from India, particularly in food grains and horticultural products. The ministers acknowledged during their meeting at Krishi Bhawan that India-Russia relations are founded on trust, friendship, and mutual cooperation.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the meeting between India’s ICAR and Russia’s Federal Center for Animal Health, aiming to enhance collaboration in agricultural research, innovation, and capacity building. Chouhan also invited the Russian delegation to attend the BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ meeting, which India will host next year.
The Russian delegation included Deputy Ministers Maxim Markovich and Marina Afonina, FSVPS head Sergey Dankvert, and Asia Division Director Daria Koroleva, while the Indian side comprised Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, DARE Secretary M. L. Jat, Fertiliser Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra, a representative from the Ministry of External Affairs, Joint Secretaries from the Department of Agriculture, along with various senior officials.
