Urgent Health Alert: Beware of Fish Consumption from Papum and Poma Rivers in Arunachal Pradesh
The District Fisheries Department of Arunachal Pradesh’s Papum Pare District in Yupia has issued a health advisory to residents of Sangdupota and Taraso Circle. Effective from August 22, locals are instructed not to consume fish—whether dead or alive—from the Papum and Poma rivers for a duration of two weeks, or until further notice.
The advisory comes following a report from the Fisheries Development Officer, who confirmed the presence of symptoms associated with Epizootic Ulcerative Syndrome (EUS) on wild fish inhabiting these rivers. This disease is leading to the natural death of fish within the river ecosystem.
The department’s statement underscored the severity of the matter: “All residents of Sangdupota and Taraso Circle under the Balijan Administration Headquarters are directed to abstain from consuming fish from the Papum and Poma rivers for a period of two weeks, starting from August 22, 2024, until further orders are issued.”
This precautionary measure is advised to prevent any potential health risks to the community, ensuring the safety and well-being of the local population. The fisheries department will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
