Devastating Landslide Claims Seven Lives in Tripura’s South District
AGARTALA: A tragic landslide in the Gardang area of Santirbazar sub-division, South District of Tripura, has claimed the lives of seven individuals, including a 3-year-old child. The incident, triggered by heavy rainfall, occurred early this morning in Ashwini Tripura village within the Gardang Panchayat, engulfing the homes of two families.
The victims have been identified as Umacharan Tripura (25), Mandira Tripura (23), Prasenjit Tripura (21), Ajay Tripura (16), Rakesh Tripura (18), Jyotika Tripura (21), and Kumtuisa Tripura (3). Rescue operations have recovered six bodies so far, with efforts ongoing to find the last victim. Local authorities and residents are actively involved in the recovery process. Several family members have sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
One survivor recalled the sudden onset of the landslide late last night, resulting in the heartbreaking loss of his three sons, daughter-in-law, granddaughter, younger brother, and his wife. This disaster is a part of a series of catastrophic events in Tripura since August 19. Severe flooding has led to approximately 2,000 landslides and claimed 10 lives across the state.
The continuing damage has left the region in distress, with sustained efforts underway to alleviate the situation and assist the affected communities. Recovery and relief operations are being conducted to address the widespread destruction and ensure the safety of residents.
