U.S. President Donald Trump announced a significant proposal on Wednesday aimed at dismantling the fuel economy standards set by the Biden administration. He argued that this rollback would reduce costs for consumers purchasing vehicles. Describing Biden’s policies as “horrible” and “ridiculously burdensome,” Trump asserted, “My administration is taking historic action to lower costs for American consumers, protect American auto jobs, and make buying a car much more affordable for countless American families.”
During the announcement at the Oval Office, Trump was joined by Ford Motor CEO Jim Farley, Stellantis NV CEO Antonio Filosa, and John Urbanic, plant manager at General Motors’ Orion facility. If finalized next year, the proposal would alleviate regulatory pressures on automakers regarding emissions from gasoline-powered vehicles, reversing Biden’s efforts to encourage cleaner alternatives.
The Biden administration had mandated that automakers achieve a fuel efficiency of 50 miles per gallon for vehicles manufactured by 2031, a move designed to enhance energy efficiency and accelerate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). Trump’s plan seeks to lower that requirement to approximately 34.5 miles per gallon for the same model year, a change likely to be well-received in the auto and oil industries, which have criticized the previous standards for exceeding technological capabilities.
“We appreciate President Trump’s leadership in aligning fuel economy standards with market realities,” stated Ford CEO Farley, emphasizing that it would allow for progress in carbon emissions while maintaining consumer choice and affordability. Earlier, Trump had eased penalties for automakers not meeting current fuel economy standards.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under Biden has also proposed rescinding limits on greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles, reflecting a broader shift away from stringent regulations. As families face rising living costs, with new car prices averaging over $50,000, Trump’s administration projects that the revised standards could save American households up to $1,000 per new vehicle, translating to an estimated $109 billion in savings over five years.
Nevertheless, critics warn that these rollbacks will lead to less efficient gas-guzzling vehicles, increasing fuel consumption for families. Trump’s assertion of consumer savings contrasts sharply with concerns over the impact on the environment. Vehicular emissions are a major driver of greenhouse gas emissions, and environmental advocates have condemned the proposed deregulation.
Dan Becker, director of the Safe Climate Transport Campaign for the Center for Biological Diversity, stated, “In one stroke, Trump is worsening three of our nation’s most vexing problems: the thirst for oil, high gas prices, and global warming.” Katherine García, director of the Sierra Club’s Clean Transportation for All program, echoed these sentiments, warning that the rollback could result in a surge of pollution and threaten public health: “This rollback would move the auto industry backwards, keeping polluting cars on our roads for years to come and threatening the health of millions of Americans, particularly children and the elderly.”
