Tech CEO Michael Dell and his wife, Susan, made headlines on Tuesday with a significant pledge of $6.25 billion to fund “Trump accounts,” a new type of tax-advantaged savings account designed for children. This landmark commitment aims to provide crucial financial support, particularly for families with children too old to qualify for upcoming $1,000 grants from the Department of the Treasury.
Under this initiative, an estimated 25 million American children born before January 1, 2025, who are currently 10 years old or younger, will be eligible for a $250 grant to be deposited in a Trump account, according to Invest America, a nonprofit organization collaborating with the Dells. “It’s meant to help families feel supported from the start and encourage them to continue saving as their children grow,” said Michael Dell, founder and CEO of Dell Technologies, in an interview with CNBC.
The Trump accounts, introduced through President Donald Trump’s “big beautiful bill” legislation passed in July, allow anyone to open an account for children under 18. Notably, newborns between 2025 and 2028 will automatically receive a one-time $1,000 grant. Importantly, there are no income restrictions; all U.S. citizens are eligible. This initiative could substantially benefit young Americans, with approximately 3.6 million births projected in 2024, according to provisional data from the CDC.
Similar to 529 college savings plans, Trump accounts encourage early savings through potential annual contributions from employers, state and local governments, and nonprofits. During a June “Invest America” roundtable at the White House, Dell committed to matching the government’s seed money dollar-for-dollar for his employees’ children, a sentiment echoed by other participating CEOs.
The funds within Trump accounts will be invested in low-cost index funds such as mutual funds or exchange-traded funds. However, some in the asset management sector have raised concerns regarding the legislation’s wording that may restrict fund options. Industry leaders have urged the Treasury to broaden its interpretations to ensure greater flexibility.
As for accessing the grants, Trump accounts are set to open on July 4, 2026. Parents and guardians will be able to contribute up to $5,000 annually in after-tax dollars until the child turns 18. To initiate an account, families must fill out Form 4547. Upon reaching adulthood, funds in the account will roll into an individual retirement account (IRA), which can be utilized for education costs, job training, a down payment on a first home, or even as seed money for a new business.
From a tax perspective, Trump accounts will operate similar to IRAs, allowing contributions to grow tax-deferred. However, the specifics regarding the tax implications of distributions are yet to be fully clarified by the Treasury Department and the IRS.
Experts express caution regarding the one-time $250 grant’s potential impact on low-income families, suggesting that greater contributions are vital to creating meaningful savings. “We need to see more contributions to truly make a difference,” noted Ben Henry-Moreland, a certified financial planner.
Moreover, the success of the Trump accounts hinges on effective public education and outreach. Ensuring automatic enrollment for all eligible families could significantly influence participation rates, especially among low- to moderate-income households. A recent analysis by the Aspen Institute emphasized the importance of this strategy, urging the Treasury to prioritize automatic enrollment for maximum impact.
