Putin’s Stark War Threats to Europe: Trump’s Ukraine Peace Efforts at Risk
President Vladimir Putin stated on December 2, 2025, that while Russia seeks to avoid war with European nations, it remains prepared for confrontation if Europe chooses aggression. He asserted, “We are not going to war with Europe, I have already said this. But if Europe suddenly wants to start a war with us and starts one, we are immediately ready.” Putin cautioned that should Europe initiate hostilities, “a situation could arise in which there will be no one to negotiate with.” This warning comes closely on the heels of a written assurance he provided days earlier, in which he promised not to attack Europe.
In his remarks, Putin accused European countries of hindering U.S. President Donald Trump’s attempts to broker peace in Ukraine. He claimed that these nations are proposing ideas that they know Moscow will “absolutely reject,” enabling them to accuse Russia of unwillingness to pursue peace. He noted, “That is their goal.” Putin remarked that European powers have distanced themselves from peace discussions due to their severed communication with Russia, labeling them as advocates of war.
Additionally, Putin threatened to deny Ukraine access to the Black Sea in retaliation for drone strikes on vessels from Russia’s “Shadow Fleet.” In a televised address, he stated, “The ultimate solution is to cut off Ukraine from the sea; then piracy will become virtually impossible.” He indicated that Russia would escalate its military actions against Ukrainian assets and ships and take measures against tankers from countries supporting Ukraine.
Recently, Ukrainian Navy drones targeted two Russian tankers in the Black Sea while they were on their way to a Russian port to load oil. On December 2, Turkey’s Maritime Authority and Tribeca Shipping Agency reported a drone strike on a Russian-flagged tanker carrying sunflower oil near the Turkish coast, which thankfully left its 13 crew members uninjured. While Ukraine distanced itself from this incident, it has also been involved in missile and drone strikes against the Russian Black Sea port of Novorossiysk, aiming to disrupt oil shipments.
