59 Permits Granted for Crucial Laterite Stone Extraction: A Bold Move by Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner!
H.V. Darshan, the Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, announced in a press meeting on December 2 that the district administration has issued 59 permits for the extraction of laterite stones from agricultural lands. He confirmed that an additional 12 applications are under review and will be processed soon.
Mr. Darshan highlighted that enforcement measures against illegal extraction and transportation over the past two months have led to a significant rise in the price of laterite stones, commonly used in construction. The current price per stone has surged to ₹65 due to these enforcement efforts, although it was recently lowered to ₹50 thanks to the issuance of permits and a reduction in royalty fees.
Addressing sand extraction in the region, he made it clear that no permits have been granted for Coastal Regulatory Zone (CRZ) areas within Mangaluru. However, he stated that operations are anticipated to begin by March in 52 sand blocks located in non-CRZ areas, which will facilitate legal sand extraction in the district.
In addition to mineral extraction updates, Mr. Darshan informed that the Mangaluru City Corporation has allocated ₹7 crore for a pothole repair initiative aimed at improving city roads. This initial phase of repairs will focus on the road connecting Karavali Circle to Pumpwell Circle, addressing longstanding infrastructure concerns for residents and commuters alike.
The developments shared in the press conference underscore the administration’s commitment to regulating resource extraction while enhancing urban infrastructure. As the district moves toward managing its natural resources responsibly, residents can expect further updates regarding both sand and laterite stone operations in the near future.
With these initiatives, Dakshina Kannada looks to balance economic growth with environmental sustainability, ensuring that local resources are utilized effectively while adhering to legal frameworks.
