Discover the Meaning Behind ‘Seva Teerth’: The Inspiring New Name for Our PMO Complex
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) will soon be housed in a new complex named ‘Seva Teerth,’ according to officials who spoke to PTI on Tuesday. Previously referred to as the ‘Executive Enclave,’ this new facility is nearing completion as part of the Central Vista Redevelopment project. In addition to the PMO, ‘Seva Teerth’ will accommodate the Cabinet Secretariat, National Security Council Secretariat, and India House, which is set to serve as a venue for high-level discussions with foreign dignitaries.
Officials explained that ‘Seva Teerth’ embodies a renewed commitment to service, where national priorities are established. This marks a significant cultural and administrative shift within India’s public institutions, transitioning the concept of governance from ‘satta’ (power) to ‘seva’ (service), and from authority to accountability. Alongside this rebranding, Raj Bhawans, the official residences of state governors, will also be renamed to ‘Lok Bhawans,’ signifying a focus on the public.
Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, government spaces have been transformed to emphasize ‘kartavya’ (duty) and transparency. “Every name, every building, and every symbol now communicates a fundamental idea: that government exists to serve,” officials remarked. This initiative aligns with recent changes, such as renaming Rajpath-the iconic avenue connecting Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate-as Kartavya Path. In 2016, the Prime Minister’s official residence was also renamed Lok Kalyan Marg to better reflect a focus on welfare rather than exclusivity.
The Central Secretariat has recently been designated Kartavya Bhavan, reinforcing a commitment to public service as a central tenet of governance. According to officials, “These changes mark a deeper ideological transition. Indian democracy is prioritizing responsibility over power and service over status.” They noted that this shift in terminology also represents a transformation in mindset-now centered on the principles of seva, kartavya, and citizen-first governance.
The announcement reflects an evolving vision of governance in India, with a clear intent to redefine the relationship between authority and the public. As these new titles and spaces are adopted, they are poised to symbolize a commitment to serving citizens more effectively and with greater accountability.
This story continues to develop, echoing broader trends toward reform in governance both in India and globally. As the nation prepares for a more service-oriented approach, the adaptations in terminology and infrastructure signal a promising shift aimed at fostering a more engaged and responsible public sector.
