NCB Uncovers Major Drug Smuggling Ring: ₹12.5 Crore Heroin Seized
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has dismantled an international drug trafficking network, seizing high-grade heroin valued at Rs. 12.5 crore that was smuggled into Assam from Myanmar via a river route. This operation, conducted by the NCB’s Guwahati Zonal Unit in collaboration with the CRPF and Assam Police, stems from weeks of intelligence gathering aimed at tracking a consignment being transported through dense forests in Manipur.
On December 1, authorities intercepted a local motorboat on the Barak River near Silchar in Cachar district, apprehending two local residents. A search of the boat revealed 6.149 kg of heroin, packed in 530 soap cases and hidden beneath layers of bamboo. Investigators believe this significant shipment originated in Myanmar and was destined for the Hmarkhawlien–Fulertal–Lakhipur area.
Officials have noted that traffickers increasingly use riverine routes to circumvent surveillance systems, police checkpoints, and security camps, a trend that poses growing challenges for enforcement agencies in Northeast India. The NCB stated that this seizure represents a major setback for an international cartel operating along the Myanmar-Manipur-Assam corridor.
The two arrested individuals will face charges in court, alongside the confiscated drugs. In response to this ongoing issue, the NCB’s North Eastern Region office has intensified its coordination with state police, drug enforcement agencies, and central armed forces. Recent Joint Coordination Committee meetings have been held involving the states of Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura to enhance regional strategies against trafficking networks.
