PM Modi Expresses Deep Concern for Former Bangladesh PM Khaleda Zia’s Health: Ready to Extend All Support!
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed serious concerns regarding the health of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia, recognizing her longstanding contributions to the nation’s political landscape. The 80-year-old leader, who chairs the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), was hospitalized on November 23 due to a chest infection that subsequently affected her heart and lungs. Modi extended heartfelt prayers for her recovery, affirming that India stands ready to provide any necessary support during this challenging time.
In a post on X, Modi stated, “Deeply concerned to learn about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia, who has contributed to Bangladesh’s public life for many years. Our sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery. India stands ready to extend all possible support, in whatever way we can.”
Zia’s condition remains grave, according to party leaders who revealed that she is “extremely unwell” and on ventilation, with both local and international medical experts overseeing her treatment. Four days post-admission, Zia was transferred to the coronary care unit as her health complications intensified. BNP Vice-Chairman Ahmed Aazam Khan remarked, “She is in a very critical condition. There is nothing more to do except seek prayers from the whole nation,” while speaking outside Evercare Hospital.
The former Prime Minister has been enduring a multitude of health issues, including complications related to her liver and kidneys, arthritis, diabetes, and vision problems. Earlier statements from BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir indicated that doctors believe Zia may require treatment abroad; however, her current state does not permit travel.
Zia returned to Bangladesh on May 6 after spending four months in London receiving advanced medical treatment. Her elder son, Tarique Rahman, who serves as the acting chairman of the BNP, has been residing in London since 2008. Tragically, her younger son, Arafat Rahman, passed away in 2025 following a cardiac arrest.
The BNP’s prominence has surged in Bangladesh’s evolving political landscape, particularly following the student-led protests that led to the overthrow of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5, 2024. Zia’s political influence and her party’s resurgence are critical components of the current narrative in Bangladeshi politics.
As the nation rallies for her health, the community remains focused on both her recovery and the implications of her political legacy.
