Transforming Lives: Telangana’s Bold Leap Towards a 2030 AIDS-Free Future as HIV Prevalence Plummets!
On the occasion of World AIDS Day, the Telangana State AIDS Control Society (TGSACS) has announced significant progress in combating Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) in the State. Through enhanced testing, treatment, and community outreach, Telangana is on the path to managing HIV as a chronic illness, aligning with the national aim of eradicating AIDS as a public health issue by 2030.
Recent data indicates a drop in adult HIV prevalence in Telangana, now at 0.41%, down from 0.44% in 2023. This translates to a remarkable 58% reduction in new HIV infections. TGSACS is also advancing under the global UNAIDS 95-95-95 initiative, which strives for 95% of people living with HIV to know their status, 95% of those who know their status to be on Anti-retroviral Therapy (ART), and 95% of those treated to achieve viral suppression. The State’s target is to cover 156,961 individuals, with 143,173, or approximately 91.2%, already reached.
Vasam Venkateshwar Reddy, Project Director of TGSACS, attributes this success to the expansive HIV testing services available in all districts, community outreach conducted by civil society organizations, and the accessibility provided by mobile testing units. The initiative has also contributed to a noticeable decline in HIV-related mortality, with improved ART adherence, better access to CD4 and viral load testing, and enhanced management of opportunistic infections. From 2023 to 2024, Telangana saw a reduction of 977 deaths, approximately 16.5%. Thus far, in 2025, there has been a further decrease of 193 deaths, equating to about 3.9%.
Reddy highlights the impact of district-level outreach and prevention programs, emphasizing awareness campaigns targeting youth, workers, students, and women’s groups. These initiatives have fostered safer practices and early detection. Regular condom distribution, robust sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinic services, and effective information and communication campaigns have collectively contributed to the decline in new infections.
Currently, the State operates 22 government ART centers and eight private hospital ART centers, offering improved medicine availability, counseling services, and laboratory facilities. Community awareness initiatives have played a crucial role in driving progress, ensuring that testing coverage exceeded annual targets from 2023 to 2025. Statewide campaigns have screened 821,508 general and antenatal care samples, identifying 5,517 individuals as HIV positive.
Social protection measures have expanded under the Cheyutha support program, providing financial assistance to beneficiaries. In 2023, 34,656 individuals received support, with numbers climbing to 35,547 in 2024, and reaching 45,374 beneficiaries thus far in 2025.
With continued commitment to improving testing, treatment, and community engagement, Telangana remains dedicated to the fight against HIV/AIDS, as it strives for a healthier future for all its citizens. The State’s embrace of proactive strategies and community involvement demonstrates a scalable model that could inspire similar initiatives elsewhere. By addressing both healthcare and social support, Telangana aims not only to manage but to eventually eliminate the public health threat posed by AIDS.
The ongoing efforts reflect the State’s commitment to creating sustainable solutions that ensure the well-being and dignity of every individual affected by HIV.
