Heart-Wrenching Standoff: Assam Sanitation Workers’ Half-Naked Protest in Bongaigaon Sparks Urgent Attention
Sanitation workers, led by the Safai Karamcharis Association, staged a half-naked protest outside the Bongaigaon Municipality office on Tuesday, demanding better wages and housing.
The demonstration coincided with the ongoing state assembly session, aiming to highlight the workers’ dire conditions. Currently, these sanitation workers receive a meager honorarium of Rs 3,000, which they assert is inadequate to meet their basic needs. Previous negotiations between the government and the workers, including talks held at Badamba, have failed to yield solutions.
Bhim Basfor, the central president of the Safai Karamcharis Association, voiced his frustration over the issue. He noted that while municipalities are being recognized and awarded for cleanliness efforts, these accolades come at the expense of the well-being of sanitation workers. Basfor criticized the neglect from both government and municipal bodies regarding the ongoing hardships faced by these essential workers.
The protest is part of a broader movement advocating for justice, with primary demands revolving around better housing and increased wages. As of yet, the government has not issued a response addressing the grievances of the sanitation workers.
