In the aftermath of the November 10 blast near the Red Fort, survivors are grappling with the drastic changes to their lives, particularly as they face job losses and a lack of government support. The explosion killed at least 14 individuals and left over 20 injured, leaving many without means to sustain themselves.
Bhawani Shankar, a 34-year-old resident of Noida, is one of those affected. He lost his vehicle in the blast and is now anxiously considering how to manage an upcoming loan payment of ₹18,400 due on December 10, 2025, for a car he purchased just ten months ago. “I bought the vehicle to earn a living through Uber and Ola,” he explains, “but now, without it, I’m struggling.” Currently nursing serious burn injuries on his left arm and face, Shankar expressed frustration over the authorities’ lack of clarity regarding his vehicle’s condition and the absence of financial assistance from the government. “They haven’t even allowed insurance companies to assess my car,” he added.
Similarly, Yasin Ansari, an e-rickshaw driver from Karawal Nagar, lost his only means of income in the attack. After selling his wife’s gold jewelry to buy the e-rickshaw for ₹2 lakh, he now faces a grim future. “I’m torn between going back to my village and uprooting my family or staying here and trying to make ends meet,” he lamented. Ansari, who suffered burns and head injuries in the blast, is currently turning to old employers for stitching gigs to support his family. “Stitching doesn’t pay well, but it’s something,” he said, reflecting the dire circumstances many are facing.
For 23-year-old Shania Parveen, the traumatic impact of the blast altered her life completely. A resident of Daryaganj and former accountant, she lost her job after missing work while recovering at LNJP Hospital. “I couldn’t even inform my boss about my situation,” she recounted, sharing how her father had to step in to explain her absence. Shortly thereafter, she received a text from her employer terminating her position due to her absence. The psychological toll has been profound; Parveen learned she had sustained hearing damage, and her wedding plans, which she was preparing for on the day of the blast, are now indefinitely postponed. “I don’t know when I’ll get married,” she said, despair evident in her voice.
Doctors informed her that corrective surgery for her hearing loss is necessary, but there is still uncertainty regarding the procedure’s logistics and costs. As she navigates this bewildering landscape, Parveen emphasized the urgent need for government assistance to help survivors like herself. “In moments like these, support would mean everything,” she said. With uncertainty looming, these survivors continue to hope for acknowledgment and aid, highlighting the critical need for comprehensive support systems in the wake of such tragedies.
As the community comes to terms with the blast’s impact, the lack of immediate governmental response raises questions about the support provided to those who have lost everything.
