Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz addressed the Democratic National Convention on Wednesday night, affirming that he and Vice President Kamala Harris would “turn the page on Donald Trump.” Accepting the Democratic nomination in Chicago as Harris’ running mate, Walz declared, “We’ve got something better to offer the American people.”
In a lively 15-minute speech, the shortest by a vice presidential nominee since at least 1984, Walz traced his roots from a “small town of Butte, Nebraska,” to his career as a public school teacher, football coach, member of the National Guard, and Congressman. “Never underestimate a public school teacher,” he emphasized.
He also shared personal struggles, recounting his and his wife Gwen’s battle with infertility. “Even if you’ve never experienced the hell of infertility, you know somebody who has,” Walz said, highlighting the emotional toll of the journey: “The pit in my stomach when the phone would ring, and the agony when treatments hadn’t worked. It took Gwen and me years.”
Walz connected these personal stories to a broader theme of freedom, contrasting Democratic and Republican values. “When Republicans talk about freedom, they mean government intrusion into your doctor’s office and corporate impunity,” he asserted. “When we Democrats talk about freedom, we mean the freedom to make a better life for yourself and your loved ones, to make your own health care decisions, and for your kids to go to school without fearing gun violence.”
Referencing “Project 2025,” a contentious blueprint for a second Trump administration, Walz warned that its implementation would significantly harm ordinary Americans. He criticized the attempts by Trump and his running mate JD Vance to distance themselves from it, stating, “When somebody takes the time to draw up a playbook, they plan on using it.” He labeled the project “an agenda that serves nobody but the richest people and most extreme voices in our country.”
Overall, Walz presented a sharp and vivid contrast between Democratic and Republican visions, appealing to voters’ desire for a more compassionate and inclusive America.
