Nagaland Launches Urgent 16-Day Activism Against Gender-Based Violence

The Department of Social Welfare, Government of Nagaland, is set to launch a 16-day Activism Campaign from November 25 to December 10, aimed at eradicating gender-based violence. This initiative begins on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and concludes on Human Rights Day, focusing on increasing awareness and mobilizing action to combat gender-based violence across the state.

The department is urging all stakeholders to utilize this time to conduct comprehensive awareness campaigns. This campaign aligns with the United Nations’ HeForShe initiative, which encourages men and boys to act as allies for gender equality. To kick off the campaign, the Department, in collaboration with the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission, will host an event on November 25 at the Capital Convention Centre in Kohima, where they have requested all departments to send five male officials to participate.

The campaign will showcase various government efforts to address gender-based violence and promote the rights of women and girls. Activities may include workshops and seminars centered on key legal frameworks such as the Domestic Violence Act of 2005, the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act of 2013, the POCSO Act of 2012, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita of 2023, among others. These sessions will help raise awareness regarding victim compensation and special rights for women and girls.

Additionally, a social media campaign will be launched to enhance visibility around women’s rights, relevant laws, One Stop Centres, helpline numbers, and the Bal Vivah Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. This campaign will also focus on increasing awareness of the Sexual Harassment Electronic (SHe) Box portal and various emergency helplines.

Efforts will be made to promote accessibility to crucial services under the Mission Shakti programmes, such as the One Stop Centre and other facilities aimed at empowering women. The campaign will also work toward linking Gender Resource Centres and One Stop Centres in various districts.

Workshops targeting teachers and students will be conducted to highlight concepts of gender equality, the significance of consent, and the distinction between positive and negative physical contact. Furthermore, initiatives will encourage the involvement of men and boys in promoting positive masculinity and countering harmful gender stereotypes, with proposed changes to educational curricula to integrate these important themes.

Finally, the campaign aims to sensitize frontline workers in childcare institutions, Anganwadi Centres, One Stop Centres, and women’s shelters regarding gender issues, ensuring a widespread understanding and commitment to addressing gender-based violence in all sectors of society.
