Discover India’s Smallest Railway Station: A Hidden Gem Awaits You!
The Banspani Railway Station, nestled in the charming town of Banspani in Odisha’s Keonjhar district, holds the distinction of being the smallest railway station in India. This tiny station spans only 200 meters in length, featuring a single platform that lacks the capacity to accommodate longer express trains.
Despite its size, Banspani plays a vital role in the local transport network, primarily serving regional travelers. However, its significance extends beyond passenger services; the station is a crucial hub for freight transport, especially for minerals like iron ore, which are abundant in the area. Notably, Banspani is reported to be the second-largest iron ore loading station for Indian Railways, trailing only behind Jaroli station in Odisha.
As for passenger services, Banspani Railway Station, designated with the code BSPX, is designed primarily for local commuters rather than long-distance travel.
Currently, only four passenger trains operate through this station: the Barbil-Puri-Barbil Indian class Intercity Express, Brahmapur-Tatanagar Vande Bharat Express, Puri-Anand Vihar Terminal Weekly Express, and Visakhapatnam-Tatanagar-Visakhapatnam Weekly Late Express. This limited train schedule reflects the station’s inability to accommodate longer express trains.
While Uttar Pradesh boasts the highest number of railway stations in India, with 1,173, other major states like Maharashtra, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat follow closely behind. Interestingly, there is one Indian state that has only one railway station.
