Deputy Speaker Numal Momin Defends SIR Amid Claims of Illegal Voter Benefits
Reacting to allegations by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding voter list manipulation, Assam Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr. Numal Momin came to the defense of the government’s initiatives on November 24. He stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had taken a significant step towards ensuring transparency in the electoral process.
Dr. Momin pointed out that the Election Commission of India is undertaking a comprehensive exercise for the first time to identify legitimate voters and eliminate illegal names from electoral rolls. He accused the Congress party of being “habitual beneficiaries” of illegal voters in previous elections.
According to Dr. Momin, the Congress party is concerned that the implementation of the Standardisation of Electoral Roll (SIR) in the five upcoming assemblies could lead to results similar to those seen in Bihar. He expressed that Rahul Gandhi should have lent his support to this reform, as it would bolster India’s democratic future. “Instead of working for a brighter future, he tries to tarnish India’s image abroad. Naturally, SIR will not favor him,” he commented.
In response to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh’s recent remarks regarding territorial issues, Dr. Momin asserted that it is “natural” for discussions about border changes to occur, given that Pakistan and Bangladesh were once part of undivided India. He expressed strong support for Singh’s position, stating, “It is high time we reconsider our borders. India should take back Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and reclaim parts of Bangladesh to create a region that protects minority communities facing persecution on religious grounds.”
