BJP Alliance Eyes Victory in 103 Assam Seats for 2026 Elections
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its alliance partners will contest 103 out of the 126 assembly constituencies in Assam during the 2026 elections. Sarma expressed confidence that the ruling coalition is well-positioned for a decisive victory. Speaking to reporters after a state core committee meeting in Guwahati, he stated that the BJP is on track to “comfortably win” based on its development agenda.
Sarma downplayed concerns about electoral outcomes, citing recent successes in Bihar, Maharashtra, Haryana, and Delhi as indicators of the party’s ongoing strength. He noted that while the BJP aims to contest 103 seats, it does not guarantee a win for all, emphasizing a realistic approach rather than making grand claims.
Earlier, the BJP confirmed its strategy to partner with allies for the 2026 elections, focusing on winning those 103 constituencies. Sarma also mentioned that they expect some support from Assamese Muslims but do not anticipate votes from the “Miya” community, which refers to Bengali-speaking Muslims. He remarked, “If they give, it is well and good, though we do not hope for it.”
The Chief Minister highlighted that changes in delineation will allow the BJP to nominate more youthful and female candidates in the upcoming elections. “Previously, we could contest a maximum of 90 seats, but now we can offer tickets to a greater number of youth and women,” he said.
Sarma confirmed that the party has begun its election preparations and will establish 36 sub-committees, details of which will be announced soon. He emphasized that the BJP does not face any significant political challenges in the state. “The BJP has members from all communities. Without their support, we could not have grown into such a large organization,” he stated.
The meeting included prominent BJP figures such as national general secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh, state president Dilip Saikia, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and other senior leaders. Before the core committee meeting, Sarma addressed newly appointed coordinators for all 126 constituencies, outlining strategies to promote government schemes and achievements through party workers.
Additionally, Sarma reiterated the government’s commitment to taking decisive action against polygamy, as well as “love and land jihad,” and announced plans for strict measures against alleged encroachment of government, forest, and other lands by Bengali-origin Muslims.
