BJP Eyes 103 Assam Seats, Claims Support from Assamese Muslim Votes
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) electoral strategy for the state on November 21, emphasizing that the party and its allies can realistically expect to win no more than 100 seats in the upcoming elections due to the region’s population distribution. “We can contest in 103 of the 126 seats in Assam. However, this does not imply we can’t compete in other areas. Considering the population pattern, the BJP and our allied parties can realistically reach 103 seats. Our focus will be on these 103 seats,” he stated.
Following a recent delimitation exercise, Sarma pointed out significant shifts in the electoral landscape. Previously, the BJP contested in 90 constituencies, but 10 to 15 new constituencies have now emerged where there is no sitting Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). “This time, we can organically support the rise of youth and women within the party,” Sarma remarked, indicating a push to introduce fresh candidates.
In discussing community support, Sarma indicated that the BJP remains popular among Assamese Muslims, though he distinguished between these and the Miya Muslims, from whom the party does not anticipate support. He mentioned that in his own constituency, the party garners around 30,000 Muslim votes, showcasing strong backing from the Assamese Muslim community.
Sarma’s comments come as the BJP gears up to strengthen its stronghold in Assam ahead of the next assembly elections, with a focus on expanding its influence while acknowledging the demographic realities of the state.
