Urgent Weather Alert: Heavy Rain to Hammer South Coastal and Delta Districts Until November 25!
Heavy rainfall is expected to persist across southern Tamil Nadu and the delta districts until November 25, driven by a developing low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has announced that this low-pressure area is anticipated to form over the Southeast Bay of Bengal this Saturday and may intensify into a depression by November 24. Forecasters indicate that this weather system could gain strength further by November 26, with the RMC closely monitoring its potential evolution into a cyclonic storm.
P. Senthamarai Kannan, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre in Chennai, emphasized that the trajectory of the weather system after it becomes a depression will significantly impact rainfall across Tamil Nadu. He noted that a persistent northeast monsoon current is currently sustaining the ongoing rain in the state, particularly affecting the south coastal and delta regions.
The RMC has specifically forecast heavy rainfall for 11 districts, including Cuddalore, Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, and Kanniyakumari on Saturday. While many areas in southern Tamil Nadu can expect light to moderate rainfall, a continuation of heavy rain is likely in the south coastal and delta districts until November 24. Following this period, isolated showers are predicted across the state on November 25.
The continuous dry spells experienced earlier this month have contributed to a seasonal rainfall deficit of 28.4 cm, falling 7% short of the average of 30.5 cm. The Meteorological Department categorizes deviations of up to 19%—whether excess or deficit-as normal. Unfortunately, several districts, including Tiruppur, Chengalpattu, Perambalur, Dindigul, and Chennai, have recorded lower-than-average rainfall since October 1.
In its November outlook, the RMC indicated a 35%-45% likelihood that most areas in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry would experience below-normal rainfall this month. As of Friday, districts such as Vellore, Nagapattinam, Chennai, and Kanniyakumari received light rainfall by 6 p.m. The Meteorological Department has also forecasted that Chennai may see one or two spells of light to moderate rainfall this Saturday.
As the weather situation develops, residents and businesses in southern Tamil Nadu are advised to stay informed about potential weather changes and to prepare for the possibility of heavy rain in the coming days. The RMC’s continued monitoring will provide updates on any significant shifts in the weather system, underscoring the importance of remaining vigilant during this period of fluctuating rainfall. With conditions evolving, it’s crucial for communities to stay prepared and informed as the region braces for continued rainfall.
Chennai will remain in the spotlight as it experiences changes brought on by this low-pressure system, marking the need for residents to stay alert through this rainy spell.
