US Approves $93 Million Arms Sale to India Amid Strengthening Defense Ties
The Trump administration has approved approximately $93 million in military sales to India, highlighting the strengthening defense relationship between the two nations. This decision, made public on November 20, comes as part of ongoing efforts to bolster military cooperation.
The State Department sanctioned the sale of Javelin anti-tank missile systems valued at around $45.7 million, alongside Excalibur projectiles estimated to cost $47.1 million. The Defense Security Cooperation Agency indicated that India has requested 100 FGM-148 Javelin missiles, one fly-to-buy missile, 25 command launch units, and 216 Excalibur tactical projectiles.
Officials stated that this sale aims to reinforce the strategic partnership between India and the United States and enhance the security of a significant defense ally. The agency noted, “This proposed sale will support the foreign policy and national security objectives of the United States by helping to strengthen the US-Indian strategic relationship.”
The deal follows the announcement of a new 10-year defense cooperation framework between Washington and New Delhi, which aims to expand collaboration in military technology and information sharing. On October 31, Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh met with US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth in Kuala Lumpur to sign the framework. Singh emphasized the importance of this agreement, stating that it would signal a new era in the already strong defense partnership.
Singh shared on social media that the meeting was productive and that the framework would provide policy direction for the entire spectrum of the India-US defense relationship. He characterized the agreement as a sign of the growing strategic convergence between the two countries.
Secretary Hegseth echoed these sentiments, stating that the defense ties between India and the United States have “never been stronger,” and emphasized the need for enhanced coordination and technological cooperation. This latest military sale is a crucial step in solidifying the long-term defense partnership, which aims to ensure regional stability and deter potential threats.
