Tambaram Corporation’s Commitment: Closing the Gaps in Open Dumping with Enhanced Monitoring and Accountability
Tambaram Corporation Grapples with Solid Waste Management Challenges
Tambaram Corporation has acknowledged significant shortcomings in its solid waste management, particularly concerning open dumping. In 2023, the municipal corporation outsourced garbage collection across its five zones. However, despite enforcing strict penalties — including ₹1 crore collected as a fine in July for poor management of open dumping — the issue persists. Commissioner S. Balachander admitted that confronting the problem has been challenging, despite issuing warnings to the contractors. He assured that measures to enhance the monitoring system would be implemented within two months.
Commissioner Balachander also outlined plans to improve urban solid waste management by introducing more infrastructure, backed by State funding. This announcement was in response to concerns raised by civic activist Pugalventhan Venkatesan on X (formerly Twitter). Venkatesan highlighted the lack of infrastructure and workforce at an intermediate transfer station in Pammal, near Thiruneermalai. This station, formerly managed by Pammal Municipality, became a part of the Tambaram City Municipal Corporation in 2021.
The Commissioner noted that a significant accumulation of legacy waste had occurred over the years, exacerbated by flood events. Preparations are now underway to process approximately 12 tonnes of waste daily within the next two months. The Corporation plans to establish four new Material Recovery Facility (MRF) centres and a Construction and Debris (CND) disposal unit. Additionally, tenders for a bio-CNG processing unit, estimated at ₹50 crore, are open. All these facilities are slated to be developed on a 50-acre site in Venkatamangalam.
With these developments, Tambaram Corporation aims to address the pressing issue of solid waste management comprehensively, leveraging better infrastructure and state support to tackle long-standing challenges.
