NPP Dismisses Rumors of Replacing WR Kharlukhi with Agatha Sangma

SHILLONG, Aug 21: The National People’s Party (NPP) has denied speculations regarding the potential replacement of Rajya Sabha member WR Kharlukhi with Agatha Sangma if Kharlukhi decides to step down before his term concludes in 2026. NPP state president Prestone Tynsong questioned the credibility of these reports and clarified that there are no current plans for such a change. Tynsong emphasized that any resignation from Kharlukhi should follow proper procedures.
While admitting that Kharlukhi might resign at any time, Tynsong assured that the NPP is prepared to find a suitable replacement if necessary. He noted that the party’s strong position has been reinforced since three Congress MLAs joined its ranks.
Reaffirming the NPP’s commitment to the MDA 2.0 coalition, Tynsong stated that despite their absolute majority, the NPP aims to see the coalition government complete its term. Addressing queries about a potential Cabinet reshuffle, Tynsong remarked that any decision on ministerial changes lies with Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma.
Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar added that the government would honor any requests from NPP allies concerning Cabinet reshuffles. He dismissed allegations that the NPP is attempting to eliminate Congress from the state, asserting that the three Congress MLAs joined the NPP out of their own volition to foster development in their constituencies.
Addressing claims regarding biased allocation of developmental projects, Dhar acknowledged that ruling party MLAs naturally receive more projects but dismissed any notion of partiality against opposition MLAs. On whether the NPP plans to invite the lone Congress MLA Ronnie V Lyngdoh to join their party, Dhar stated that there is no such intention at present.
