UK Immigration Overhaul: Home Secretary Set to Reveal Major Changes
The United Kingdom is set to implement its most significant immigration reform in modern history. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood is scheduled to address the House of Commons today, outlining sweeping changes aimed at addressing illegal migration. Mahmood emphasized the need for the UK to regain control over entry and residency within the country. The proposed reforms, inspired by the Danish immigration system, strive to deter illegal immigration and facilitate deportation processes.
As part of these new measures, refugees will be required to wait 20 years before applying for permanent settlement in the UK. Their status will shift to temporary and will undergo regular review, allowing for their removal if their home countries are deemed safe for return. Furthermore, housing and weekly allowances for asylum seekers will no longer be guaranteed, and the Home Secretary plans to legislate against multiple appeals for denied asylum claims. The Home Office pointed to a recent surge in asylum applications, attributing this increase to what it called a “golden ticket” effect, which has drawn individuals from across Europe to journey through safe nations to the UK on perilous small boats.
Additionally, the reforms will introduce safe and legal pathways for entering the UK, aiming to reduce the risks associated with dangerous boat crossings across the English Channel.
