Join the Fight: Renewing Our Commitment to End Cervical Cancer
World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day, observed on November 17, is an unprecedented global health initiative recognized by the Seventy-eighth World Health Assembly. This day is dedicated solely to the eradication of cervical cancer, marking a crucial milestone in public health efforts.
The movement began on November 17, 2020, when 194 countries pledged for the first time to eliminate cervical cancer. During this historic gathering, the World Health Organization introduced a comprehensive global strategy aimed at tackling cervical cancer as a significant public health issue. Since then, countries, communities, and partners have come together annually to enhance access to HPV vaccinations, high-quality screening, and treatment services, promoting women’s health, equity, and universal health coverage.
This year’s observance emphasizes urgent, collective action toward achieving the ambitious 90-70-90 targets by 2030. These targets call for 90 percent of girls to be vaccinated against HPV by the age of 15, 70 percent of women screened with a high-performance test by age 35 and again by age 45, and 90 percent of women diagnosed with cervical disease to receive appropriate treatment. The WHO highlights the importance of this moment, stating, “Every life counts.”
As the global community reflects on the progress made and the challenges ahead, the commitment to eliminating cervical cancer remains a vital public health mission that can save countless lives.
