Empowering Change: PGI Hosts Awareness Drive for World Diabetes Day
On November 14, in observance of World Diabetes Day, the Endocrinology Department at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) organized a special awareness program for diabetes patients. This initiative took place in collaboration with the Association of Diabetes [young] in Tricity (ADITI) and the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India (RSSDI), held at the New Outpatient Department (OPD) block.
Experts highlighted the urgent issue of diabetes, describing it as a pandemic of significant concern, with one in ten people globally affected according to the International Diabetes Federation. In India, the number of diabetics stands at 77 million in 2025, projected to increase to 134 million by 2045. Doctors emphasized that diabetes is a metabolic disorder that impairs the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar due to inadequate or ineffective insulin. Continuously elevated blood sugar levels can lead to severe complications that affect vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nerves. Contributing factors include genetics, environment, and lifestyle choices, but proper management through monitoring, timely medical intervention, and healthy living is crucial.
World Diabetes Day, which honors Sir Frederick Banting, the co-discoverer of insulin, serves to raise awareness and promote prevention and care strategies. This year’s campaign was centered on the theme “Diabetes and Well-Being.” Dr. Linta Thomas delivered insights on different types of diabetes, symptoms, and treatment options, underscoring the importance of adhering to insulin therapy. Other speakers included Dr. Benjamin, who discussed possible complications and the necessity of self-care; Dr. Sunil Mishra, who focused on lifestyle and dietary considerations; Dr. Prabhat Rijal, who addressed concerns about hypoglycemia; and Dr. Varun, who highlighted the risks of diabetic foot ulcers. Additionally, Dr. Soham Mukherjee provided advice on preventative foot care, while Nursing Officer Mrs. Sabpreet Kaur demonstrated correct techniques for insulin injections.
