Adani Power & AGEL Secure Assam LoA for Rs 63,000-C Energy Projects
Ahmedabad, Nov 14: Adani Power and Adani Green Energy, key companies in the Adani Group, have received Letters of Award (LoA) from the Assam government for two significant projects totaling ₹63,000 crore. Adani Power, the largest private power generator in India, is set to invest ₹48,000 crore to build a 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical power plant in Assam. Meanwhile, Adani Green Energy Ltd (AGEL) plans to invest ₹15,000 crore to develop two Pumped Storage Plants (PSP) with a combined capacity of 2,700 MW.
AGEL’s LoA includes 500 MW of energy storage capacity to be supplied by these PSPs. The thermal power plant and innovative pumped storage facilities mark a substantial investment in the state. Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasized the importance of the North-East in India’s growth trajectory, stating that these projects signify the largest private sector investment in the region and are crucial for energy security, industrial progress, and job creation.
These initiatives align with Adani Group’s commitment to developing India’s northeastern region and come on the heels of Gautam Adani’s promise in February to invest ₹50,000 crore for regional development. He remarked that the projects will energize Assam and stimulate development across the northeastern corridor, expressing eagerness to forge partnerships that benefit local communities and facilitate India’s energy transformation.
Adani Power succeeded in securing the project by offering the lowest tariff of ₹6.30 per kWh during a competitive bidding process. The company plans to establish the plant under the Design, Build, Finance, Own and Operate (DBFOO) model, having secured coal linkage under India’s SHAKTI Policy.
The project is projected to create approximately 20,000 to 25,000 jobs during construction and maintain about 3,500 jobs during operations, with commissioning expected to begin in phases starting December 2030. AGEL also emerged as the lowest bidder for the 500 MW energy storage project, which aims to enhance energy storage solutions, grid stability, and manage peak demand. This initiative is vital for integrating renewable energy into the grid, advancing Assam toward a greener future.
