New National Highway Unveils Potential along 658-km Indo-Myanmar Border Road
Union Minister of State for Road Transport and Highways Ajay Tamta announced that a 658-km Indo-Myanmar border road project is currently undergoing a feasibility study and is set to be designated as a new National Highway. Speaking at a press conference in Imphal, Tamta highlighted that the Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is engaged in the development of 11 national highways in the state, totaling 1,774 km in length.
To date, 747 km of these highways have been upgraded to two-lane configurations with black topping, while the remaining 332 km is scheduled for completion by the next financial year, 2026-27. The minister noted that there are a total of 51 project packages in progress, which have involved an investment of approximately Rs 12,000 crore over the past five years.
Tamta emphasized that the MoRTH is dedicated to enhancing road connectivity throughout Manipur, with these initiatives being executed through the National Highway and Infrastructure Development Corporation (NHIDCL) and the Manipur Public Works Department (PWD). He acknowledged that delays in the implementation of 35 project packages were due to issues related to land acquisition and forest clearance but assured that NHIDCL is now concentrating efforts to ensure these projects are completed promptly.
The minister also outlined plans for three major highway corridors: Imphal-Jiribam (NH-37), Yaingangpokpi-Finch Corner (NH-202), and Tamenglong-Mahur (NH-137), along with Churachandpur-Tuivai (NH-102B) and Maram-Peren (NH-129A), aiming for completion by 2025-26. Additionally, NHIDCL is preparing detailed project reports for new highways, including the 262-km Churachandpur-Tipaimukh (NH-02) and the 57.91-km Mao-Senapati (NH-02) Greenfield alignment.
