Assam’s Bold Step: 278 Schools Embrace Dimasa for Mother-Tongue Education
The Assam government has made a significant announcement, revealing that 278 Lower Primary schools statewide will begin operating as Dimasa Medium Lower Primary Schools starting in the 2025–26 academic session. This initiative aims to protect and promote the Dimasa language, enabling children from the Dimasa community to learn in their mother tongue during critical early education years.
An official notification from the Department of School Education (E.No. 632888/79) confirmed that the designated schools will utilize Dimasa as the medium of instruction at the foundational level. The government’s decision highlights its commitment to linguistic diversity and cultural preservation, stating that it is “in the interest of the public in general and for preserving and promoting the Dimasa language.”
This initiative primarily targets schools under the North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council (NCHAC) and may extend to other regions with significant Dimasa-speaking populations in the future. Officials, including the Director of Elementary Education, the Director of SCERT, and the Mission Director of Samagra Shiksha Assam, have been tasked with overseeing and implementing this important transition effectively.
Education experts have praised the move as a critical step for promoting linguistic inclusion and preserving local culture in Assam. This decision reflects the government’s broader commitment to enhancing education in indigenous languages and ensuring that children can engage with their cultural heritage from an early age.
