Scandal Unveiled: Evolve Bank CEO Fired for Shockingly Inappropriate Behavior with Posing FBI Agent
An FBI investigation has led to the firing of Bob Hartheimer, the CEO of Evolve Bank & Trust, following allegations of inappropriate conduct on a gay dating app. On October 19, 2021, an FBI employee logged onto Grindr, posing as a 15-year-old boy. Hartheimer, using the username “Tomm,” allegedly initiated contact by asking if the teen would be interested in meeting an “older and chill guy.” According to an affidavit from an FBI special agent, their conversation escalated with discussions about potential meet-ups and explicit exchanges over Snapchat.
The investigation revealed Hartheimer sent a nude photo to the undercover agent and requested a similar image in return. The FBI secured Hartheimer’s IP address through Snapchat, which ultimately led to his arrest on October 23 in Memphis. He faces charges of attempted production of child pornography and the transfer of obscene material to a minor.
In light of the serious accusations, Evolve Bank confirmed his termination. A spokesperson for the bank stated, “We are in close contact with the U.S. Attorney’s office and have been assured that this is a personal matter and does not relate to the bank or its operations in any way.” Hartheimer’s attorney, Blake Ballin, emphasized that the CEO’s family supports him and requested privacy during this challenging time.
This incident comes amid a rocky period for Evolve Bank. Last year, the bank faced significant issues stemming from the bankruptcy of financial technology startup Synapse, which resulted in up to $96 million in missing deposits and financial losses for customers. Additionally, in 2024, Evolve encountered a cyberattack that compromised customer data but did not result in a ransom payment.
Hartheimer had previously been heralded for his extensive experience, including roles at the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation as director of the Division of Resolutions. Evolve Bank, a century-old financial institution, has been grappling with significant financial challenges, reporting net losses in the first three quarters of 2025 after a prolonged period of profitability.
As Evolve Bank looks to stabilize its operations, senior executives Mark Mosteller and Joelle Weltzin will oversee the bank while it navigates this tumultuous time. The bank had initially lauded Hartheimer’s leadership as part of its efforts to regain the trust of its stakeholders.
The unfolding situation highlights ongoing concerns around leadership accountability in the financial sector, especially as institutions attempt to recover from various scandals and operational hurdles.
As this story develops, Evolve Bank and its management are under scrutiny, with many investors and customers eager to see how the bank’s leadership will respond to these latest challenges.
