Overcoming Logistics Challenges: Boosting Growth in Tripura’s Rubber Industry
Logistics constraints continue to impede investment and the establishment of rubber-based industries in Tripura, according to a senior official. Tripura ranks as India’s second-highest producer of natural rubber, yet its significant industrial potential remains largely untapped due to infrastructural gaps and inadequate connectivity to major markets.
High transportation costs and insufficient logistics infrastructure present major obstacles for setting up rubber industries in the state. “While Tripura has a plentiful supply of raw materials, the high cost of transporting finished products makes industrial operations less viable,” the official stated. Currently, a single rubber thread production unit operates in the Bodhjungnagar Industrial area located in West Tripura district.
Efforts are underway by the state government to attract additional investments by offering incentives, enhancing connectivity, and cooperating with the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation (TIDC) and the Rubber Board to improve industrial infrastructure. Officials believe that the state’s proximity to Bangladesh, along with upcoming connectivity projects like the Agartala-Akhaura railway link and better access to Chittagong Port, may create new opportunities for exports and improve logistics efficiency.
“Once these new transport links are operational, Tripura could become a key hub for rubber-based industries in the Northeast,” the official added. Every year, the state produces over 70,000 tonnes of natural rubber, which supports the livelihoods of thousands of small growers. However, due to a limited number of processing and manufacturing facilities within Tripura, a significant portion of the raw rubber is sent outside the state for further processing.
