Assam Set to Enhance Travel Experience with 3 New Amrit Bharat Trains
Guwahati: The northeast region is poised to welcome affordable and fast Amrit Bharat trains in the near future. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Sunday to discuss improvements to Assam’s railway network, which will include the introduction of three new Amrit Bharat trains.
During their meeting in New Delhi, Sarma and Vaishnaw emphasized accelerating the construction of a new railway line from Kokrajhar to Gelephu Mindfulness City in Bhutan, a project aimed at enhancing cross-border transport links. Key points of discussion also included the introduction of the three new Amrit Bharat trains and a proposed rail connection from Umrangso town to Lanka in Hojai district.
At the Advantage Assam 2.0 Investment and Infrastructure Summit held in Guwahati in February, Vaishnaw indicated that Amrit Bharat trains were expected to be operational in Assam within ten months. However, railway officials noted that these trains are still under construction, and there is currently just one Amrit Bharat train in Bihar, which is part of the Northeast Frontier Railway zone. A railway official commented, “Assam and the northeast do not have an Amrit Bharat train as of now. This budget train with sleeper coaches will significantly benefit passengers.”
Additionally, Sarma and Vaishnaw explored the possibility of increasing the number of stops in Assam for major trains that traverse the state. Sarma shared on X, “Had a very productive meeting with Hon’ble Minister Shri @AshwiniVaishnaw Ji this morning. We deliberated on the key issues aimed at expanding railway services in Assam to enhance connectivity for our people.” He expressed gratitude, stating, “Happy to share that the Hon’ble Minister has kindly consented to these action items.”
