Flooding Disrupts Train Services in Telangana: Urgent Travel Advisory
Train services in Telangana’s Mahabubabad district were severely disrupted on Wednesday, October 29, as flooding from heavy rainfall caused by Cyclone Montha affected railway tracks at Dornakal. Multiple trains, including the Guntur-Secunderabad Golconda Express, were halted at Dornakal Railway Station, while the Mumbai-Bhubaneswar Konark Express and the Adilabad-Tirupati Krishna Express were stopped at Mahabubabad Railway Station.
Additionally, the Sainagar Shirdi Express was forced to halt at Kondapalli in Krishna district. Reports indicate that at least 12 goods trains came to a standstill at various railway stations throughout Andhra Pradesh. The South Central Railway (SCR) announced the cancellation of 127 trains and diversion of 14 others due to the cyclone’s impact.
In a further development, the SCR confirmed the cancellation of the Secunderabad-Visakhapatnam Express and the Howrah-Secunderabad Falaknuma Express, both scheduled for departure on October 29 and October 30. However, the routes for the Howrah-Secunderabad and Howrah-SMVT Bengaluru services were reverted to their normal paths, departing from earlier diversion plans. The trains canceled on October 29 included services from Nanded to Visakhapatnam and Visakhapatnam to Lingampalli, among others.
Sanjay Kumar Srivastava, General Manager of South Central Railway, convened a review meeting on Tuesday to assess safety measures and develop an action plan in response to the cyclone. He engaged principal department heads and officials from the Vijayawada and Guntur divisions to ensure comprehensive monitoring of the cyclone’s trajectory for prompt protective measures.
Srivastava urged officials to collaborate closely with state government representatives and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams to evaluate the conditions of railway-affected areas, ensuring track and train safety. He also emphasized the importance of conducting Monsoon track patrols in regions likely to be affected. To provide real-time updates, stationary watchmen have been assigned to all vulnerable locations, particularly bridges.
