India is moving forward with plans to upgrade its Sukhoi Su-30MKI fleet following the recent retirement of the MiG-21 fighter jets, which has reportedly reduced the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) operational squadron strength from 42 to 29. As noted in a report by the Indian Express, this significant upgrade, commonly known as the Super Sukhoi program, is expected to extend the aircraft’s service life by up to 20 years.
Officials involved in the discussions have indicated that the Ministry of Defence is currently reviewing the upgrade proposal, with efforts underway to expedite its consideration by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS). A senior official, wishing to remain anonymous, revealed to Indian Express that the proposal is being prioritized for approval to move into the design and development phase soon.
The upgrade will encompass a comprehensive suite of enhancements, including a new cockpit, advanced avionics, state-of-the-art radars, IR sensors, and an upgraded electronic warfare system featuring jammer pods. Sources have suggested that the program is nearing finalization. Once sanctioned by the CCS, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the state-owned aerospace and defense company, is expected to deliver the initial operational clearance version of the upgraded aircraft within five years, and the final operational clearance version by the end of seven years.
The timing of this upgrade is particularly critical, given the diminished squadron strength of the IAF. As it stands, the air force has not yet received any of the 83 Light Combat Aircraft Tejas Mk1A from HAL, which further emphasizes the urgency for bolstering the fleet.
In November 2023, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, authorized an Acceptance of Necessity for this indigenous upgrade of the Su-30MKI fleet. Additionally, in December of the previous year, the DAC also approved the procurement of an Electronic Warfare Suite (EWS) composed of advanced protection systems for the aircraft.
The Ministry of Defence has stated that these enhancements are aimed at improving the operational capabilities of the Su-30MKI and ensuring greater security against enemy radar systems and other weaponry. Last year, the DAC also granted approval for overhauling the engines of the Su-30MKI, which is anticipated to further increase the aircraft’s service life.
