Embracing the Stars: How Hanle Protects Its Dark Skies for a Brighter, Enchanting Future

Astronomy, one of humanity’s oldest sciences, is experiencing a renaissance in Hanle, a remote village in the Himalayas recognized for its stunningly dark skies. With a Bortle-1 rating-the highest clarity on a nine-point scale-Hanle is now celebrated as India’s first dark sky reserve. This initiative, a collaboration between the Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) in Bengaluru, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and the Ladakh Hill Development Council, aims to promote both sustainable development and stargazing tourism in this once nomadic region.

Nestled within the Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary, the Hanle Dark Sky Reserve is safeguarded against light pollution, ensuring exceptionally clear views of celestial bodies. Home to the Indian Astronomical Observatory, the site boasts two optical telescopes and Cherenkov telescopes equipped for advanced astronomical research. According to Dorje Angchuk, the engineer-in-charge, Hanle’s pristine conditions-characterized by minimal atmospheric particles and low light pollution-make it an ideal location for astronomers.

To further protect the reserve’s dark skies, the IIA has provided local residents with lamp shades, blackout curtains, and warm-toned bulbs. In a bid to support local economies through astrotourism, IIA scientists have also trained 25 youth, including 18 women, as “Astronomy Ambassadors.” These trained ambassadors lead night-sky tours, sharing their knowledge while earning supplemental income.

Since 2023, Hanle has hosted an annual “star party,” and this year’s event, held from September 18 to 23, drew numerous amateur astronomers, astrophotographers, and stargazers. Unlike typical social gatherings, this star party encourages participants to immerse themselves in silent observation under the vast, dark sky. This year, 47 attendees explored the wonders of the universe, benefiting from tutorials on celestial phenomena alongside hands-on opportunities to capture the night sky.

Ajay Talwar, an amateur astronomer with decades of experience, highlighted the unique viewing conditions in Hanle, where rare phenomena such as zodiacal light-an ethereal glow caused by sunlight scattering off interplanetary dust-can be seen. Other spectacular sights include the gegenschein and the Belt of Venus, described by Talwar as vibrant displays not easily seen elsewhere.

Acclimatization is essential for visitors to Hanle, situated at an elevation of 4,250 meters. Participants are advised to arrive two days early in Leh to adjust to the thin air, with medical checks ensuring safety during their stay. The star party itself concluded with an open event welcoming locals and tourists to share telescopes and view the night sky together, fostering community engagement.

According to Rangdol Dorje, an Astronomy Ambassador, the influx of tourists has positively impacted the local economy, attracting around 10,000 visitors in 2024. This interest in Hanle’s celestial beauty has led many visitors to inquire about stargazing opportunities, especially regarding planets and the moon.

The star party also emphasizes educational outreach, with ambassadors teaching astronomy concepts to local schoolchildren during quieter winter months. Efforts to preserve traditional knowledge of the night sky are ongoing, with local educators gathering stories and proverbs that connect cultural heritage to the cosmos.

Namratha Pathak, a scientist from India’s Department of Science and Technology, praised the rich interplay between science and indigenous knowledge as crucial for conservation efforts. For many who attended, including educators like Khursheed Alam and Rashmi Sheoran, the star party offered profound insights, bolstering their commitment to share newfound knowledge in their communities.

As Hanle continues to thrive under its motto—“come for the mountains, stay for the stars”—the dark sky reserve not only preserves the awe-inspiring Himalayan nightscape but also nurtures the local economy by inviting the world to experience its celestial wonders firsthand.
