Shocking Twist in Maharashtra Doctor’s Suicide: Arrested Pune Techie Alleges Harassment and Marriage Demands
A Pune software engineer, Prashant Bankar, was arrested on Saturday in connection with the tragic suicide of a 28-year-old government doctor in Maharashtra’s Satara district. This followed the surrender of a co-accused individual, who had also been implicated. According to police reports, Bankar claims the doctor harassed him, pressuring him to marry her and engage in a physical relationship.
Bankar was identified as one of the two men mentioned by the doctor in her suicide note. His brother stated, “We had called him and told him to surrender. His social media records and call details have been shared with the police. My brother never initiated contact; instead, it was the doctor who repeatedly called him.”
In a statement to reporters, Bankar’s sister revealed that her brother had been recovering from dengue in Phaltan last month, during which time the doctor treated him and they exchanged numbers. Approximately two weeks ago, she proposed marriage, but Bankar declined. “During Diwali, she appeared tense, but we attributed it to work-related stress. She was like family to us; our mother considered her a daughter,” she added.
Police have uncovered numerous chats and call recordings between the accused and the deceased, with content discussing stress and pressure. The doctor’s cremation took place on Friday night in her native village in Wadwani tehsil, Beed. Relatives of the victim are now demanding the death penalty for those involved, highlighting that she had made multiple complaints regarding harassment that went unaddressed.
One family member indicated that the doctor faced significant pressure from local political figures to alter medical reports at the sub-district hospital, where she regularly performed autopsies. “She had complained about this pressure many times, but her grievances were ignored,” the relative stated, referencing the police officer named in her suicide note.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis described the incident as “very serious,” noting that the doctor had written her suicide note on her hand before taking her life. He assured the public that strict action would be taken against those responsible, emphasizing the government’s commitment to addressing the issues surrounding this tragic case: “No one will be spared. Immediate actions have been taken, including suspending the relevant police officials.”
The court has remanded Bankar into four days of police custody, with further investigations ongoing. This distressing case brings to light significant concerns regarding mental health, harassment, and accountability within the community. As details continue to emerge, the case remains a focal point for discussions on the treatment of individuals in stressful professions and the importance of addressing allegations of misconduct.
As communities react to this incident, it underscores the need for comprehensive support systems for professionals facing similar pressures, urging a more profound examination of mental health resources and protective measures in the workplace. With the public demanding justice, this story is poised to resonate widely, prompting discussions on the protections available for individuals in vulnerable positions.
