Brace for Impact: IMD Issues Orange Alert with Torrential Showers in Delhi, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, and More!
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for several states, forecasting heavy rainfall today. The affected states include West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Uttarakhand, Lakshadweep, Puducherry, and Kerala. According to IMD’s social media post on X, a low-pressure area over southern Bangladesh is likely to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall across East and East-central India over the next three days. Additionally, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Lakshadweep in the coming 2–3 days.
In Delhi, the Regional Meteorological Centre predicts the maximum temperature to reach around 36 degrees Celsius, with a minimum temperature near 27 degrees Celsius. The capital is expected to experience light rain and a generally cloudy sky, with wet conditions likely to persist over the next five days.
IMD scientist Dr. Naresh Kumar highlighted that heavy to very heavy rainfall is anticipated in Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and the South Peninsular region. Uttar Pradesh is also expected to see significant rainfall in the next 5-7 days, while Delhi NCR will experience light rain.
The IMD’s latest press release outlines that isolated heavy rainfall is highly probable in Kerala and Lakshadweep until August 21, with Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka also expecting showers on specific dates later this week. Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, and Lakshadweep are forecasted to experience isolated very heavy rainfall on August 20.
For West and Central India, widespread light to moderate rainfall is very likely over central India, Konkan & Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra, with scattered showers anticipated in Marathwada and Gujarat this week.
In East and Northeast India, isolated heavy rainfall is predicted in West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, and Jharkhand until August 23, while Odisha will see rainfall on August 20 and 23. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura will likely experience precipitation until August 24.
