Rediscover the Flavors of the Madras Presidency: Experience Authentic Culinary Masterpieces in Bengaluru!
A new culinary gem has opened its doors in Bengaluru, paying tribute to the rich gastronomic heritage of the erstwhile Madras Presidency. Madras Kitchen, situated in the posh UB City area, offers a diverse menu showcasing signature dishes from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, northern Kerala, and parts of Karnataka. Guests can indulge in regional delicacies such as Dindigul biryani from Tamil Nadu, Telangana’s mokkajona garelu, and Travencore’s Kanava Peera, each reflecting the vibrant flavors of South Indian cuisine.
Located within the newly launched Marriott Executive Apartments Bengaluru UB City, Madras Kitchen invites diners to experience its beautifully designed space. Upon entering on a rainy evening, I was greeted with a tour of the restaurant, which features a tasteful blend of rattan, red brick, and brass accents. The first level houses the dining area, while the upper floor boasts a cozy bar, complete with a well-stocked selection. The plush, intimate ambiance of both spaces makes them welcoming for hotel guests and visitors alike.
The cocktail menu at Madras Kitchen is a celebration of South Indian ingredients. One standout is the Onam Uppu, a creative mix of white rum, Cointreau, and ajwain seeds. Another unique offering is the By Two Highball, inspired by the tradition of enjoying filter coffee, combining coffee reduction, jaggery syrup, and whisky. My personal favorite was the Bangalore Rains, a refreshing cocktail featuring tequila, green chili, lime juice, and curry leaf, delivering a delightful punch with its balanced spice profile.
To begin my meal, I sampled a variety of small plates. The Pogabettina Mettani Vankaya, a smoky aubergine dip served with a crispy thatte idli, was an absolute textural delight. The dish paired beautifully, with the deep-fried idli adding a crunchy contrast. The Kappa Cutlet, made from chewy tapioca and spices, was served with a vibrant beetroot chutney, while the Chromepet Kozhi 65 offered a spicy chicken experience with marinated meat and a side of curry leaf sour cream. Each dish was enhanced by a selection of delightful dips and chutneys, with the Rava Fried Nethilis disappearing quickly from our table.
Despite feeling somewhat full from the starters, I ventured into the main course offerings. The Dindigul biryani, crafted from authentic seeraga samba rice, was a triumph, showcasing perfectly balanced spices. I also enjoyed the Urali Mappas-baby potatoes paired with flaky, buttery parottas-a must-try. Another highlight was the Pallateru Mamsam, featuring succulent mutton cooked with poppy seeds and coconut, offering an explosion of flavors.
While the service was a bit slower than expected, likely due to opening day jitters, the quality of the food more than compensated for it. Madras Kitchen is a must-visit for anyone exploring Bengaluru or the culinary landscapes of South India. With a cost for two at ₹3,200, it promises a memorable dining experience.
