Syiem Celebrates Major Milestone in Ri-Bhoi Road Development Project
Nongpoh MLA, Mayralborn Syiem, expressed satisfaction with the ongoing construction of the Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road, a vital project aimed at enhancing connectivity among several villages in the Ri-Bhoi district. Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Syiem highlighted that the initial 20 kilometers of the road, financed by the state government, are progressing well and are anticipated to be completed by early 2026, likely between January and February.
However, Syiem noted that the subsequent 38-kilometer segment, under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), is experiencing delays. To mitigate this, he plans to hold a review meeting with the contractor after the rainy season to expedite construction efforts.
Addressing commuter safety, Syiem emphasized the importance of disciplined driving once the road is operational. He warned motorists against reckless behavior, urging both private and commercial vehicle drivers to adhere strictly to traffic regulations. Additionally, he reminded two-wheeler riders of the necessity of wearing helmets consistently, asserting that a well-constructed road should not encourage lax safety measures.
While the improved infrastructure promises significant benefits, Syiem asserted that the project’s true success will ultimately depend on the responsible behavior of commuters using the new route.
