Jeevan Barthaakur, still not known as Zubeen Garg, has not yet released his superhit album “Anamika.” While studying at J.B. College in Jorhat, Jeevan collaborated with Luna Saikia on keyboard performances and even composed a couple of songs. Earlier, he had earned expertise in tabla when he was in the fifth grade in Karimganj. During his time in Bijni, he discussed music under the guidance of Ramani Roy. Ramani, who had difficulty walking, traveled by rickshaw to teach Zubeen music. Later, Zubeen retained the mentor’s child along with him. While in seventh grade, his sister Junkie performed a dance on stage, during which Zubeen sang and played tabla, astonishing all who watched. The feat of singing while playing tabla was no small challenge. During his teenage years, as his voice changed, Zubeen focused more on playing instruments rather than singing. Thus, in Tamulpur, after Bijni, he had stepped back from singing.

In Dibrugarh, a musical band named etc. was formed by youths like Rana, Ritu, Deep, Dhruv, and Doni, who performed at various events. Doni lacked a decent keyboard, but a good opportunity arose when someone mentioned Zubeen had a quality keyboard. Doni, along with a friend, took a bus to Jorhat, where Zubeen lent them the keyboard, which was quite expensive at the time. After appreciating the music of the etc. band, Zubeen insisted they perform for his album “Anamika.” Subsequently, the name changed to “Zubeen Garg Band.”

On the sixth day of Durga Puja in 1992, “Anamika” was released amid turmoil due to insurgency in Assam, the stir of Hindi songs, and the dire state of Assamese music. The album was produced with a budget of 80,000 rupees, with Zubeen also traveling to Mumbai to record a song with Kavita Krishnamurthy. The unique flavor of the songs, including “Hahile Tumi Mukuta Mani Sare,” gained widespread popularity. The cassette of the album sold out by Dashami. Meanwhile, youths from Sonari discussed inviting Zubeen Garg for an event. Tickets for the event at Pobitra Margherita, which he headlined, were priced at 20, 30, and 50 rupees. Zubeen performed songs from the “Anamika” album at the event, which was set at a total of 6,000 rupees. After deducting expenses for the vehicle and musicians, Zubeen earned 2,000 rupees from his first stage performance. Zubeen was initially hesitant to discuss the event’s revenue, so Jayanta Bordoloi took over the management responsibility from 1993 to 1997.

In the meantime, Zubeen Garg’s band eventually moved to Mumbai. However, in 1997, he returned to Assam and established a new band for Bihu performances. Following this, Pobitra Margherita was assigned as Zubeen’s manager.

Anupam Saikia owned a blue scooter, which he and Zubeen used to travel to Gauhati University. During this time, Zubeen also won a Gold Medal for singing at a youth festival held there, and his first stage performance was scheduled for 11,000 rupees.

Zubeen Garg gained unique recognition from singing Bihu songs. He sang seven tracks on his first Bihu album “Ujaan Pirity,” along with one from Khagen Gogoi. Prior to that, Zubeen had recorded his first Bihu song titled “Janmoni Oi Posowa Fagunor.” This marked a new trend in singing at higher pitches. After a performance in Sonari, Zubeen garnered much attention during an event in Duliyaan, witnessing a large crowd for the first time. As he approached the stage, he stumbled over a cable and fell, leading people to mistakenly believe he had been drinking.

In 1994, the album “Maya” was released with Ritu Saikia accompanying him. Ritu, having experienced betrayal in love, expressed her pain to Zubeen, saying, “Sokolo Maya.” This led Zubeen to quickly compose the song “Maya Maya Mathe Maya” within 30 minutes, marking the beginning of the album’s success. Following this, songs from “Maya” also became popular.

Biman Baruah once said, “If Zubeen records a song and emerges from within humming it, you will know it will surely be a superhit.” At that time, Biman referred to Zubeen as Sankardeva. At home, Zubeen preserved and studied Western music albums, reflecting on the past decade. No matter the circumstances, Zubeen Garg possessed the innate ability to create music, giving Assamese songs a new identity by incorporating Western influences. His contributions resonated well, making him a household name.
