Last month, J.D. Power released its annual North American Airport Satisfaction Study for 2025, evaluating the experiences of millions of travelers across major airports, classified as “mega” airports with over 33 million passengers annually. This year’s study assessed overall passenger satisfaction based on seven core dimensions: ease of travel through the airport, trust in the airport, terminal facilities, airport staff, the departure/to airport experience, food and beverage retail, and arrival/from airport experience.
The findings were derived from 30,439 surveys completed by U.S. and Canadian residents who traveled through at least one airport in the previous 30 days, with data collected from July 2024 to July 2025. Michael Taylor, the practice lead for the airport study at J.D. Power, emphasized the increasing number of travelers passing through airports. “While the annual growth rate in passenger volume seems to be leveling off, we’re still seeing record numbers, and most passengers are enjoying their travel experience,” he noted in a press release.
For the second consecutive year, the top three airports remained unchanged, a trend Taylor attributes to their solid performance in essential areas. “It’s about the basics: how accessible the airport is, cleanliness of facilities, and quick TSA processes,” he explained. He highlighted that food and beverage options usually have the most significant impact on overall satisfaction.
Despite the ongoing government shutdown that has affected air travel, it has yet to shift the satisfaction rankings of mega airports. Taylor advised travelers to brace for travel delays. “Prepare not to be in the air and expect more delays,” he added. “While this may affect satisfaction, it’s typically a temporary situation.”
This year, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport reclaimed its title as the top mega airport in North America, earning a score of 660 out of 1,000. Located conveniently between Minneapolis and St. Paul, the airport benefits from effective collaboration with the state’s Department of Transportation, which enhances signage and overall passenger experience. Taylor pointed out the unique highway signs guiding travelers to terminals, stating this is quite rare in the U.S. Minneapolis-Saint Paul International serves over 37 million passengers annually, making it the 18th busiest airport in North America. In addition, it was recognized as the world’s most punctual airport in 2023 by travel analytics firm Cirium.
Following closely behind is Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, which secured the second spot with a score of 649. Taylor noted improvements in food options and retail spaces, helping to reflect Detroit’s culture. The airport features a simple layout that promotes a sense of spaciousness, reducing passenger stress and allowing for efficient TSA processing.
Completing the list of the top ten mega airports are Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, Harry Reid International Airport, John F. Kennedy International Airport, Orlando International Airport, Miami International Airport, San Francisco International Airport, and Boston Logan International Airport.
These rankings highlight the ongoing commitment of North American airports to enhance the travel experience, balancing efficiency with passenger satisfaction in a post-pandemic landscape. As travel continues to rebound, the insights from this study serve as a guide for improving airport operations and traveler experiences in the years to come.
