The Louvre Museum in Paris was closed on October 19 after a significant robbery occurred shortly after the museum opened to the public. French officials reported that thieves entered the museum around 9:30 a.m. local time, making off with several pieces of jewelry. Authorities are currently evaluating the total value of the stolen items.
According to investigators, the suspects arrived on a scooter and were armed with small chainsaws. They accessed the museum through an area adjacent to the Seine River, where renovation work is currently taking place.
Using a freight elevator, the thieves reached the Apollo Gallery, which houses part of the museum’s historic jewelry collection. There, they smashed windows to steal nine pieces believed to have previously belonged to Napoleon and Empress Joséphine.
Following the incident, the museum-one of the most frequented cultural sites globally-closed its doors “for exceptional reasons.” Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the robbery. Police, museum officials, and Culture Minister Rachida Dati were on-site as investigations began.
The Louvre, which drew approximately nine million visitors last year, has long represented France’s cultural heritage. The theft has sparked renewed concerns regarding the security of national treasures located within one of Paris’s most iconic landmarks.
