Pakistan and Afghanistan have announced an immediate ceasefire following several days of intense cross-border clashes, as confirmed by Qatar’s foreign ministry on Sunday. This development comes in the wake of deadly airstrikes by Pakistan that reportedly resulted in the deaths of at least 10 individuals, undermining an earlier truce. The Qatari ministry stated, “During the negotiations, the two sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to ensure lasting peace and stability between the two countries.”
Officials from both nations convened in Doha on Saturday in an effort to de-escalate rising tensions. Previously, Kabul accused Islamabad of violating a 48-hour ceasefire intended to temporarily halt nearly a week of fighting that has claimed the lives of numerous soldiers and civilians on both sides. Pakistani security officials indicated that the recent airstrikes targeted a militant group affiliated with the Pakistani Taliban, describing the action as a retaliation for an assault on Pakistani paramilitary forces.
The Pakistani delegation in Doha was headed by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif and intelligence chief General Asim Malik, while the Afghan side was represented by Defense Minister Mohammad Yaqoob, as stated by the Taliban. Violence escalated on October 11, shortly after explosions occurred in Kabul during a rare visit by Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Muttaqi to India. This event triggered a series of attacks by Taliban fighters along the southern border with Pakistan, prompting a military response from Islamabad.
