Dr. Avishek Khatiwara, hailing from Upper Dikling, Naya Busty in Pakyong District, has proudly achieved his Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Inorganic Chemistry from the Department of Chemistry at North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Shillong, Meghalaya. His research focused on Organotin (IV) Chemistry, a specialized area of organometallic science recognized for its extensive applications in medicinal and synthetic chemistry. Throughout his studies, Dr. Khatiwara published five papers in peer-reviewed international journals, showcasing the relevance and depth of his work within the global scientific community.

Dr. Khatiwara’s academic journey began at Puspanjali Vidyalaya in Pakyong, followed by higher secondary education at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Gangtok. He received his Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Chemistry from Nar Bahadur Bhandari Government College, part of Sikkim University, and went on to complete his Master of Science in Chemistry at Sikkim Manipal Institute of Technology in Rangpo.

Reflecting upon his educational path, the 29-year-old scholar expressed profound gratitude towards his mentors and family for their unwavering support. “My achievement is the result of consistent effort and academic discipline,” he remarked. He hopes his journey will motivate students from rural and small-town areas of Sikkim to pursue higher education and research with commitment and perseverance.

In an exclusive interview, Dr. Khatiwara discussed his Ph.D. experience at NEHU. He described it as enriching, highlighting the university’s collaborative atmosphere, which encouraged open dialogue and access to excellent faculty and research resources. He appreciated Shillong’s natural beauty, which provided a tranquil backdrop for focused study during his rigorous research hours.

When asked about specific challenges faced during his research, Dr. Khatiwara mentioned the difficulties in synthesizing and characterizing organotin(IV) complexes, noting their inherent instability and sensitivity to moisture. He overcame equipment limitations by collaborating with institutions both within India and internationally.

His passion for chemistry originated from a desire to understand how atomic and molecular structures determine the properties and behaviors of substances. Specifically attracted to inorganic chemistry, he became fascinated with metal-based compounds, particularly organotin (IV) compounds, due to their unique structural characteristics and diverse bonding patterns.

Dr. Khatiwara clarified that his research aims to design, synthesize, and analyze molecules containing a tin atom, known as organotin (IV) complexes. He employs various instruments, including X-ray and NMR, to examine the arrangement of atoms within these molecules, which helps to better contextualize their chemical behaviors.

Since 2023, he has published one paper in the journal Applied Organometallic Chemistry, with four additional publications following in 2025 across esteemed journals such as the Journal of Molecular Structure, Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, and two in the European Journal of Inorganic Chemistry. His participation in both national and international conferences, including the International Symposium on Emerging Trends in Chemical Sciences at NEHU, reflects his active engagement in the scientific community.

Looking ahead, Dr. Khatiwara plans to explore post-doctoral research opportunities to further delve into the applications of inorganic chemistry while nurturing his passion for teaching in a university setting. He envisions contributing his expertise to Sikkim by establishing strong academic links and research collaborations with local institutions, inspiring students, and guiding them in their pursuit of higher education in chemistry and material science.

To aspiring scholars in Sikkim, Dr. Khatiwara emphasizes: “Stay curious and never stop learning. The world of science is vast and full of opportunities. Don’t be afraid of challenges; instead, see them as opportunities to grow. Remember that perseverance and hard work are key; the road to success in research is never linear, but the journey is incredibly rewarding. Believe in yourself, seek out mentors, and most importantly, enjoy the process of learning!”
