Mizoram Triumphs Over HIV Crisis: Over 16,217 Battling Heroically with Unyielding Efforts in Place
A meeting held on Monday by the Mizoram State Council on AIDS at CM Conference Hall revealed that Mizoram has recorded 16,217 HIV positive cases and 5,021 HIV-related deaths.
Dr. Lalthlengliani, Project Director of Mizoram State AIDS Control Society (MSACS), provided a detailed status report, noting that out of the 16,217 recorded cases, 500 individuals are from other states and 633 people have refused Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). The state implements Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres (ICTC) and ART services across all districts.
The National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) estimates that Mizoram has an Adult HIV Prevalence rate of 2.73% in 2023, significantly higher than the national rate of 0.2%. This elevated rate is attributed to Mizoram’s late peak in HIV detection in 2017, compared to other states that saw peaks in 2005. Following the 2017 peak, new HIV cases in Mizoram have declined.
The council also highlighted that HIV-positive mothers can prevent transmission to their babies during pregnancy. In 2023, out of 120 HIV-positive mothers, only two infants were born with the virus. Quick identification of pregnant women’s HIV status is crucial for the success of this initiative.
MSACS staff remain optimistic that continued efforts will effectively curb the spread of HIV/AIDS in Mizoram.
