Uncovering Truth: What Zubeen’s Post-Mortem Reveals About His Legacy

When the coffin bearing Zubeen Garg’s body arrived at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in the early hours of September 23, the medical personnel understood they were not facing a typical autopsy. The 53-year-old singer had already been embalmed and examined in Singapore, where he passed away. The body reaching Guwahati had been meticulously preserved, and its organs were sealed for a second medical evaluation aimed at answering a pressing question: how did Zubeen die?

At GMCH, Zubeen’s body was found dressed in a white kurta-pyjama, lying cold and rigid in a transparent coffin. It displayed signs of a previous medical examination, including a Y-shaped surgical incision from his neck to abdomen and another along the scalp, both expertly stitched. His skin appeared pale and smooth, with the distinct smell of formalin, an embalming chemical, lingering in the air.

There were no indications of struggle, such as rope marks or broken bones. One bruise was noted-a four-centimeter area on the right side of his scalp, likely caused by a blunt impact before his death, but it wasn’t severe enough to be fatal.

The more significant evidence lay within. Microscopic examination revealed Zubeen’s lungs were swollen and heavy, filled with frothy fluid, a classic sign of pulmonary edema, which can occur in cases of drowning or respiratory failure. His heart exhibited signs of early oxygen deprivation, indicating it had begun to suffer from inadequate blood supply shortly before his death. Likewise, his kidneys showed signs of sudden oxygen loss, a condition that typically arises when circulation collapses moments before the heart stops.

Additionally, the brain displayed reactive gliosis, a change in nerve cells often triggered by stress or injury. The liver appeared enlarged and fatty, indicative of long-term inflammation known as steatohepatitis, which develops over time and is not an overnight condition.

Individually, these findings do not suggest violent assault or poisoning. Collectively, however, they point toward a body under extreme stress, with a system rapidly shutting down.

Doctors at GMCH have yet to declare a final cause of death. They sent samples of tissue and bodily fluids to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) in New Delhi for toxicological analysis. These results will clarify whether any intoxicant, drug, or chemical contributed to his demise.

Currently, initial findings seem to align with police records summarizing it as an “alleged case of drowning,” corroborated by the lungs’ fluid retention and the heart’s oxygen-starved condition. Furthermore, the report notes a lack of evidence regarding physical assault or foul play on the body.

In essence, the post-mortem reveals that Zubeen did not perish from any visible external injury. Instead, his organs narrate the story of sudden respiratory failure and heart stress, possibly caused by drowning, cardiac arrest, or both. The minor scalp injury that occurred before death could not have been the cause, and his chronic liver condition, while debilitating, was not fatal on its own.

Until toxicological reports are available, doctors have marked the official cause as “pending.” However, their observations tentatively suggest a sudden failure of heart and lungs, indicating death was not a result of violence or deliberate harm.

Each term in a post-mortem report is meticulously chosen, forming part of a legal and historical record. In Zubeen’s case, the language is clinical yet revealing, indicating a body that underwent medical handling rather than physical trauma; organs that failed in tandem due to internal collapse.

For those who cherished his music and grieve his passing, this report does not finalize the story. Yet, it provides a crucial understanding: Zubeen’s death was not violent but rather physiological, stemming from a tragic and sudden cessation of life, with further explanations pending from the viscera report expected from the Delhi laboratory.
